Description

Rare Heulandite with Scolecite Formation Specimen

Approximate dimensions:

1.9" x 1.3" x 1.2" inches

Weight: 22 grams

Heulandite is a mineral that belongs to the zeolite group and is commonly found in volcanic rocks. It is a hydrated calcium-aluminum-silicate with a complex framework structure. Its chemical formula is Ca(Al2Si7O18)•6H2O. Heulandite often forms in cavities within basaltic or andesitic lava flows or in volcanic tuffs. The mineral can also be found in sedimentary rocks, but it is less common in these formations.

One of the distinguishing features of heulandite is its crystal structure. It typically forms well-defined prismatic crystals that are elongated in the [001] direction. These crystals can vary in color from colorless to white, pink, orange, yellow, green, and brown. Heulandite crystals are often twinned and can form aggregates or radiating clusters.

Another interesting characteristic of heulandite is its ability to form in association with other minerals. In particular, heulandite often forms in association with scolecite, another mineral in the zeolite group. Scolecite is a hydrated calcium-aluminum-silicate with the chemical formula CaAl2Si3O10•3H2O. It typically forms in slender, prismatic crystals that are elongated in the [001] direction, and often occur as sprays or radiating aggregates.

The association between heulandite and scolecite is often seen in basaltic or andesitic rocks that have undergone hydrothermal alteration. The two minerals can form together in cavities or fractures within the rock, and can be found in association with other minerals such as calcite, quartz, and prehnite.

Heulandite with scolecite formation is highly sought after by collectors of minerals and geologists alike. The intricate and delicate crystal structures of these minerals are visually striking and provide important insights into the geological processes that formed them. Collectors of these minerals often seek out specimens that display the best examples of crystal form, size, and color. From a geological standpoint, the association between heulandite and scolecite can provide important clues about the temperature, pressure, and fluid chemistry conditions that existed during the formation of the rocks in which they are found.
