Description

1957-B $1 Silver Certificate | Blue Seal | George Washington

This 1957-B $1 Silver Certificate is a classic piece of United States paper-money history, featuring the familiar portrait of George Washington and the distinctive blue Treasury seal and blue serial numbers associated with Silver Certificates. The note shown bears serial number W15937966A and displays the traditional Great Seal design on the reverse.

History of the Silver Certificate

Silver Certificates were first authorized in the late 19th century as part of the United States government's effort to place silver-backed paper currency into circulation. Unlike today's Federal Reserve Notes, these bills represented a direct monetary connection to the nation's silver reserves.

The wording across the bottom of this 1957-B note reflects that history: “ONE DOLLAR IN SILVER PAYABLE TO THE BEARER ON DEMAND.” At the time, holders could redeem Silver Certificates for silver through the U.S. Treasury under the redemption system then in effect.

The Series 1957 notes were among the final generations of $1 Silver Certificates produced for everyday circulation. The 1957-B series carries the signatures of Treasurer Kathryn O'Hay Granahan and Secretary of the Treasury C. Douglas Dillon. Although dated by series rather than the exact year of printing, 1957-B notes were produced during the early 1960s.

Silver Certificates gradually disappeared as the United States moved away from silver-backed currency. Congress ended the issuance of new Silver Certificates in the 1960s, and redemption of these notes for silver was ultimately discontinued in 1968. They remain legal tender at their face value, but surviving examples are now collected primarily for their historical and numismatic interest.

About This Note

This example shows honest circulation and age, including visible folds, handling, toning, and staining consistent with a vintage note that spent time in commerce. It is currently housed in a protective currency holder.

With its unmistakable blue seal, historic silver-redemption language, and classic George Washington design, the 1957-B $1 Silver Certificate is an approachable piece of American monetary history and a great addition to a collection of vintage U.S. currency.
