The Three-Cent Nickel was produced from 1865 through 1889. The denomination developed from the need for convenient small change, including the purchase of three-cent postage stamps. The copper-nickel version was introduced after silver coins disappeared from everyday commerce during the Civil War era.

The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a coronet, while the reverse displays the Roman numeral III surrounded by a decorative wreath. The 1873 issue is also known for recognized Open 3 and Closed 3 date styles; no specific variety attribution is guaranteed for this raw coin.
